BASF among GBC Health Award WinnersJune 1, 2016
The Strategic Alliance “Affordable Nutritious Foods for Women” (ANF4W) constitutes an innovative approach to reduce the global burden of micronutrient deficiencies particularly in women of reproductive age and in children below the age of two. Worldwide, particular this target group disproportionately lacks iron, folic acid, vitamin A and zinc, while having an increased requirement for micronutrients. This has serious consequences, since it weakens the immune system and makes affected persons more vulnerable to infectious diseases. Moreover, micronutrient deficiencies increase maternal, infant and child morbidity and mortality. The ANF4W project creates a sustainable demand for affordable micronutrient-rich foods in order to reduce these inadequacies.
For ANF4W the “Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit” (GIZ) and BASF teamed up in a systemic multi-stakeholder partnership model. BASF as a leading nutrient manufacturer provides affordable high-quality vitamin A and technical assistance to local small and medium scale staple food millers. Moreover, quality control of fortified foods is made possible through the test kits of our partner BioAnalyt and BASF’s own rapid test kits. These pocket labs screen the vitamin A content in edible oils and flours in a cost-effective fashion.
